We are the Sangamo Valley Green Party. The “Sangamo Greens.” Our website here is still a work in progress. Be patient with us as we build democracy!

Members of the Sangamo Valley Green Party participated in Springfield’s first ever #BlackLivesMatter rally.  A number of Green’s were in attendance and Chris Blankenhorn spoke on behalf of the SVGP at the rally.  It was great to see so many people come and voice support for the movement and we hope that this is the beginning of a movement here in Springfield.

Sangamo Valley Green Party Stands in Solidarity with Black Lives Matter Rally at the Illinois Capitol

SPRINGFIELD, IL – July 9, 2016 – 2008 Green Party Vice Presidential Nominee Rosa Clemente insisted that she didn’t want a white ally. That instead she needed “a white accomplice, freedom fighter, revolutionary on our sides.” It is with that sentiment, that the Sangamo Valley Green Party is proud to stand in solidarity with community members from across Central Illinois and beyond, in standing together and saying this has to stop. It is time that our society actually live up to the ideals that the founding fathers paid lip service to. We cannot expect substantive change to be handed to us by those who benefit from the current state of things. Only by standing together. By putting ourselves on the line, can we hope to achieve justice. Together, there is nothing we cannot accomplish.

We strive to be better accomplices, freedom fighters, and revolutionaries in the struggle for racial justice. We demand an end to state violence, mass incarceration, and institutional racism within our justice system and communities. But these calls are not enough. Today we stand together as a community. Shoulder to shoulder. Arm in arm. Today we take to the streets and use our collective voice to say enough is enough. It is our hope that today is the beginning of a movement in Springfield. That today we take a step in adding to the chorus of voices around this country who recognize that we are in a crisis. Today we start the process of standing up and realizing our own power.

We may not always get it right. We may not always be what we aspire to be. But we have to have the courage to stand up for justice. To stand up for a better, more equitable future for us all. It is for those reasons that the Sangamo Valley Green Party proudly voices its support for the Black Lives Matter movement and is excited about the birth of a future movement here in the state capital. We pledge to challenge ourselves and our experiences, to learn from and help those around us in struggle grow as a community. Black Lives Matter. That mantra is not a challenge or attack on anyone, but a simple demand. That no matter who we are, we are deserving of respect and a life without oppression. It is a lofty goal, but one we must all work together to achieve.

Pride

We had a great time at this year’s Springfield PrideFest.  We tabled all day, collecting many signatures to get Jill on the ballot and had a lot of great conversations with community members about the Green Party.
